Life is better when we follow Jesus together!

At River Church, Community Groups are where our church family grows deeper in friendship, faith, and encouragement. While we gather together on Sundays, Community Groups provide a place to build meaningful relationships throughout the week as we learn to follow Jesus together.

These smaller gatherings meet in homes across the Norman area and are designed to help you connect with others in an authentic, welcoming environment.

What to Expect

Each Community Group meets for about an hour and a half and includes time to:

  • Build genuine friendships and share life together
  • Discuss and apply the Bible to everyday life
  • Pray for one another
  • Encourage each other to grow as followers of Jesus
  • Laugh, have meaningful conversations, and enjoy being together

Our desire is that Community Groups become more than another meeting on your calendar. We want them to be a place where you are known, encouraged, and challenged to keep following Christ.

Family Friendly

Many of our Community Groups provide childcare for elementary-aged children and younger, making it easier for parents to invest in biblical community while their kids are cared for in a safe environment.

Community Groups are co-ed and multigenerational. These gatherings take on the feel of a family as we commit to meet together, and share our lives with one another. Often times Discipleship Groups will form naturally out of Community Groups.

Community Groups last from late August through the Fall and Winter, and wrap up in late May. Groups take a short break during the summer months. This allows easy on-ramps and off-ramps for people to try different Community Groups, depending on your schedule and needs!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Community Group?

Community Groups are the primary way we build meaningful relationships and grow spiritually throughout the week at River Church. These co-ed, multigenerational groups meet in homes across the Norman area, bringing together college students, young adults, families, and older adults to follow Jesus together.

Every group feels a little different because every group is made up of unique people, but you’ll find the same focus in each one: opening God’s Word, discussing how it applies to everyday life, praying for one another, and building authentic friendships that extend beyond Sunday mornings.

Most groups meet for about an hour and a half. You’ll have opportunities to share what’s happening in your life, encourage others, ask questions about Scripture, and grow alongside people who want to know Jesus more.

Community Groups begin each September, meet throughout the fall, winter, and spring, and wrap up in late May. During the summer, groups take a break, creating a natural opportunity for people to join a new group or reconnect when a new season begins.

Do I have to be a member of River Church to join a Community Group?

No. You do not have to be a member to join a Community Group.

Whether you’ve attended River Church for several years or you’re visiting for the first time, you’re welcome to get connected in a group. Community Groups are a great way to meet people, build relationships, and experience the life of our church.

When you’re ready to make River Church your church home, we’d encourage you to learn about church membership and what it means to plant roots here. You can learn more about membership here: HERE

Are Community Groups available for college students?

Yes. Our Community Groups are intentionally multigenerational, which means you’ll often find college students, young adults, families with children, and older adults growing together in the same group. We believe every generation has something valuable to give and receive.

We also offer college-specific Bible studies and groups that meet on campus and in homes throughout the week. If you’re a student at the University of Oklahoma or another nearby college, we’d love to help you get connected.

Where do Community Groups meet?

Community Groups meet in homes throughout Norman and the surrounding communities. We believe homes create a welcoming environment where conversations are more personal and relationships grow naturally.

Specific meeting locations and days are available when group registration opens each semester.

How often do Community Groups meet?

Most Community Groups meet once a week for about an hour and a half during the fall, winter, and spring. They take a break during the summer before beginning again each August/September.

Is childcare available?

Many of our Community Groups provide childcare for elementary-aged children and younger. Childcare availability is listed with each group so families can easily find an option that works well for them.

What happens during a Community Group meeting?

While every group has its own personality, a typical evening includes time to get to know one another, discuss and apply the Bible, pray together, encourage one another, and simply enjoy spending time together. Our goal isn’t just to study the Bible. It’s to help one another follow Jesus in everyday life.

I’m new to church or the Bible. Can I still come?

Absolutely. You don’t need to know the Bible or have everything figured out before joining a Community Group. Whether you’re exploring Christianity, recently started following Jesus, or have walked with Him for many years, you’ll be welcomed and encouraged.
